LocalSend - Share files between local devices

Sometimes you need to move files between devices, and it’s often been quite a hassle to just being able to get a file from a Windows machine to an iPad or from Linux to a Mac laptop.

My most common case has often been to move files between MacOS and Android - and while Wifi File Explorer Pro has worked, it’s always seemed a little clumsy. It basically create a webserver on the Android device with a simple but quite usable interface.

Wifi File Explorer Pro does the job, but another concern is the fact that the latest update was in April 2019 (at the time of writing).

Moving to LocalSend

As more devices comes into the mix, and it’s not always to and from Android devices the files need to go, I’ve been looking for a differnt solution and found something quite good - LocalSend.

LocalSend allows you to share files between devices locally. As long as they are on the same network (wired or wireless), it seems to work fine. LocalSend is an open-source project with clients for Mac, iPhone, Windows, Linux, and Android - and even a web-based client.

I’ve only tried the Mac, Windows and Android client so far, but all have worked perfectly and allowed me quickly to move one or more files between devices as needed.

While LocalSend is straight forward and pretty much self-explanatory there are two settings I would suggest adjusting:

  • In settings you can change the name of the device.
By default it’s given a name which resemble an Ubuntu release code name.
  • Also in settings you specify where received files are stored.
Be sure to pick a place which works for you.
